Inter County Review 2018

Our Inter County season for 2018 is now finished so time for a quick review.

Starting with our Regional Inter County team, we travelled again to UEA Norwich for another battle with our regional adversaries. It was fantastic to see the team return home with the winners trophy having finished 4thlast year. A great start to the season and a great start to Janets’ Presidency.

Junior Inter Counties at Luton saw the team finish 4th(again) and Nationals we finished 7thin Division 2 for the second year running.

Over the three competitions we gave 78 swimmers the opportunity to represent the county. This is a fantastic chance for the swimmers to swim at a different level with different team mates and more often than not different coaches in charge of them as well as Team Managers around as well.

The county would like to thank the following without whom these events woud not have happened:

Coaches: Amy Thompson, Magda Klosowska, Jack Donoghue & Andrew Woodhouse.

Team Managers: Kate Burchell, Anna Baker, Sam Housden, Beata Klimaszewska, Tracey Bradshaw, Jem Laguda, Anna Belsey & Tony Moore

Officials: Louise Hughes, Phil Murtagh, Tony Chada, Matthew Brundle, Julie Baggert, Shirlayne Dunwoodie, Helena Pretious-White & Clare McCarty

As a county we appoint the coaches to select the swimmers and cover the events and Kate carries out the administrative side of things. We ALWAYS have issues recruiting Team Managers & Officials.

If you are qualified as an Official or Team Manager and would like to get involved please get in touch, in an ideal world we would like Team Managers on board now to be booking travel and accommodation for next years events.

National Teams 2018

Saturday the 6th and 7th October was the time for Swim England Hertfordshire to try their luck in Sheffield again for the National Intercounty Championships.

The day started off meeting up in Hitchin to find the pool overlooked the booking, and we had 33 very tall teenagers filling out the lobby. Great improvisation using 2 lanes with no blocks was a great excuse to practice their take overs, starts and turns especially as they had all been training hard all week.

After the session it was bags packed and on the coach to Sheffield we go. Lots of singing on the way up and a few heads taking their opportunity to sleep through the noise. A quick drop bag meant dinner which was every swimmer's dream. Eyes were lighting up seeing burgers, steaks, ribs and more Oreo Sundays in one place than I’ve seen. Was a great way to settle and wind down before bed and a busy day Sunday!

Early rise before fuelling up and ready to go on the bus.

The competition: As we walked through the Pond Forge doors we could hear the excitement and crowd for the day. Various teams were filling up the lobby waiting for entry to the pool. Once in and after a quick warm up the face paint came out, and if it wasn’t plastered all over swimmer's faces it was leaving racing streaks in the water.

For the opening ceremony we had Dan Chada and Josie Pretious-White as flag bearers which helped lead the team right from the off.

SE Hertfordshire came 7th on the day with 408 points. 3 spaces out of promotion which needed a minimum of 430 for the top 4 finish. We had some great swimmers performing well so early on in the season. Started off with our first win from Sara Kalawska on her 100 fly which then followed by a sub minute 100 back for Jude Liddiard, a massive pb for Sam Pyefinch for his 100 free and pbs from Erin O’Meara and Ben Green on the 100 Breast.

We had some great relays splits too with Jess Woodward clocking a 26.44 and Reece Housden coming home in a 23.56 in the 6x50 relay. Medley relays saw Zachary Patel dropping a low 26 on his 50 fly, Michael Ripper a low 24 in 50 free and Emily Lush getting a 27.43 in the 50 free. The 14/15yrs girls stormed their medley relay to win from the start with Lily Merrett and Erin O’Meara swimming great pbs.

With all done for the day and swimmers and staff tired from all their hard work, we made a detour (thanks Ralph for service station information!) for some ‘healthy’ food, thanked our bus driver who was brilliant all weekend, and I would like to thank swimmers for their dedication and hard work over the weekend, and being good ambassadors for SE Hertfordshire. I would like to give a huge thank you to Anna Baker & Sam Housden for without them the weekend wouldn’t have gone so smoothly, a big thankyou to Janet, Clare and Helena for offering their services to help officiate and represent SEH. Also a big thankyou to all the parents for their support with some coming to watch for themselves. Without these people working hard behind the scenes, it wouldn’t have been so successful.

Many thanks

Jack

On Sunday 16thSeptember, some of Hertfordshire’s best and brightest age-group swimmers travelled to Luton for The Bedfordshire Junior Inter County Competition 2018. Having seen the recent success of the senior Inter county team in July, all eyes were on Hertfordshire to see if they could replicate the feat with their junior swimmers.

The team of 38 swimmers arrived in high spirits, alongside swimmers from Norfolk, Suffolk, Essex, Warwickshire, Leicestershire, Lincolnshire, and the host county, Bedfordshire. It was a vibrant and bustling poolside, with hundreds of swimmers all turned out in their respective county colours and a balcony full
of spectators in good voice. With the poolside teams ready, the meet soon began with an exciting round of frantic relay activity.

After a steady start, it was the 11-year-old boys team that first got Hertfordshire celebrating, with an excellent 2ndplace finish in the 200m Medley. With momentum starting to build, Joel Pietersen then achieved the team’s first win of the day in the 11 Yrs 50m Freestyle, winning the race by over a second in a time of 29.46.

With the boys going strong, it wasn’t long before Kirsty Fuge and Daniel Holiss demonstrated the strength of Hertfordshire’s breastrokers, with both competitors finishing an excellent 2ndplace in the 12 Yrs 100m Breastroke. With momentum of results building, Sam Pyefinch then went on to display another strong swim in the Boys 13 Yrs 100m Backstroke, finishing 2ndin a time of 1.09.22. However, against quality opposition, the team had to dig deep to see out a number of tough races and make sure they kept pace with the top of the leader board.

With the pressure mounting, it was Kaia Phillips who got Hertfordshire back on track, with an emphatic win the in Girls 12 Yrs 100m Backstroke, with a time of 1.13.78. Boosted by this result, it wasn’t long before Valeria Giron showed great determination to finish 3rdin the Girls 13 Yrs 100m Butterfly, with only 0.8 separating the top three. With the last individual of the section, it was Peter Soczewska who then stepped up to swim the boys 13 yrs 100m Butterfly. After seeing his team mate finish 3rdbefore him, Peter swam a storming second 50m to claim 1stplace, almost a full second ahead of his closest rival.

Entering the final run of relays, Hertfordshire looked set to fluctuate anywhere between 3rd-8th, with Suffolk and Essex holding commanding leads over the rest of the field. With our youngest swimmers getting off to a tough start, it was the mixed 11 yrs 200m Free team, made up of Thea Patel, William Fawcett, Alice Longman and Joel Pietersen, who pulled out an excellent third place finish to keep up the pressure. This was soon followed by Kaia Phillips, Kirsty Fuge, Molly Cobbold, Isabella Yeabsley, who finished an excellent 2ndplace in their 4x50m 12 Yrs Medley as well as Nathanial Mapley, Daniel Holliss, Max Hill and Alex Twyford, who also finished second for the boys.

Moving into the final 8 individual swims, it was Sam Pyfinch who again impressed with a 2ndplace finish in the Boys 13 yrs 100m Freestyle, before Joel Pietersen claimed his second 1stplace of the day in the boys 11 yrs 50m Butterfly. Once again impressing in the breastroke, it was Hertfordshire’s Georgia Pritchard who continued the team’s winning ways in the girls 13 yrs 100m Breastroke event, with a time of 1.22.66, before James Gisborne finished 3rdin the Boys race of the same distance.

For the final race of the day, Hertfordshire once again gave an excellent account of themselves in the 8 x 50m Mixed Squadron. The team finished a strong 4th, which went onto be Hertfordshire’s final standing for the gala - just behind Warwickshire (3rd), Essex (2nd) and Suffolk (1st).

A big thanks goes to Anna Belsey and Tony Moore for their work as Team Managers work, as well as Matthew Brundle, Julie Baggett & Shirlyne Dunwoodie for officiating. An additional thank you must also go to Kate Burchell for all the behind the scenes work calling everyone up, as well as Bryan and Amy Thompson for all their hard work behind the scenes. Finally, thank you to all the swimmers who took part in the event, raced so well. A great day of racing all round!

Andrew & Magda

Full results can be found: https://bedscountyasa.com/results/2018/InterCounty/index.php
